That was the problem. If Hughes had been replaced when it was obvious to any onlooker with an interest that he'd fallen into a malaise and before things got toxic we'd have been able to attract a high quality Manager/HC but PC couldn't see what the fuss was about. There's far too much fascination with "playing defence" at Stoke. All this don't lose hard to beat nonsense was the core belief of the outgoing regime. It's absolute unproductive garbage that is good for neither getting promoted or avoiding relegation. Score goals, win as many games as you can, don't keep sending people home miserable. In hindsight Hughes should have gone earlier than he did but look at some of the idiots employed after him.
Coates family didnt want European manager. In hindsight Hughes should have gone earlier than he did but look at some of the idiots employed after him.
That’s because they’re useless at running a football club.Coates family didnt want European manager.
That and hughes was why we went down.
That’s because they’re useless at running a football club.
He threw money at it and got lucky. He was hopeless at running a football club. Twice taking us to what is now called league One.Peter Coates was brilliant for Stoke City and knew what he was doing. He knew what he wanted and stuck by his decisions.
I’d certainly question some of Tony Scholes activities but Peter was great.
Unfortunately John seems to be clueless, appointing others to advise him who are equally clueless

Obviously he was lucky. It was all on the back of bet365 which he provided the seed money for but he'd shown no suggestion that he could grow a company to produce such revenues. We don't know whether there was any other interested parties. His "Golden Share" prevented any alternative bidders from being successful against him. We got promoted to the premier league with what is still the joint lowest points total for automatic promotion from the championship with said manager who had and hasn't since had any record of such finishes. A manager who failed to even get Middlesboro in the play offs despite the biggest budget in the championship at the time. In short he just isn't a serial winner that some Stoke fans mysteriously see him as. He's never won a single thing in his managerial career. You're right in my opinion that's an awful lot of luck, non of which has fallen upon his Son to date. Lets not try to kid anyone Peter made at least as many bad appointments as John has. Within that lottery he got lucky with 2 of them Pulis and Macari, most of his other appointments were horrific.Took us to league one when nobody on the board had a penny you mean ? It was Peters putting his own cash in that kept the club alive. They were dark days.
I don’t think anyone that gets a club to the top flight either gets lucky or doesn’t know what they’re doing. Without Peter Stoke City would probably have gone the same way as Bury. Who wanted to buy us when the Icelandics ran off ? Nobody that’s who. There were no interested parties, nobody was remotely interested and against his families advice he took control again.
Not sure how you get lucky by going after the same manager twice. The same manager that took us to the Premier League, the FA Cup Final and European football.
John hasn’t got a clue but his father was a very astute business man who knew football inside out, sat on FA committees and was well respected among many other football league chairmen. It’s you opinion but calling him ‘lucky’ is way off the mark.
